Towards a French Sanremo »? The future of the Eurovision France national selection

Will we soon see the return of a Eurovision France national selection? You might think so. In an interview on Sud Radio on Friday 21 March 2025, Alexandra Redde-Amiel, Director of Games Entertainment at France Télévisions, spoke about the masterly performance of Louane at the Stade de France last week, who unveiled his song " Mum" Alexandra Redde-Amiel also said she wanted to " growing the Eurovision brand" . But more than that, she declared that she had " l’ambition de revenir à une sélection nationale, d’avoir un Sanremo français" .

Then she continues: " Ce qu’il faut retenir c’est qu’on aime l’Eurovision, qu’on le fait avec passion, c’est l’histoire d’une équipe, c’est l’histoire d’une dynamique, l’histoire d’une envie d’aller chercher un jour cette victoire" .

This desire to strengthen the brand and get artists and audiences more involved augurs well for future editions. There's plenty to get French Eurovision fans excited about!

L’histoire de la Sélection Nationale Eurovision France

Au fil des années, la Sélection Nationale Eurovision France a adopté différents formats. Si l’on remote aux les 25 dernières années, le candidat a été retenu par l’émission « Eurovision: the selection« , en 1999 et 2000, puis par l’émission « A candidate for Eurovision » in 2005, then Eurovision 2006: What if it were you? ? » and finally " Eurovision 2007: What if we won?" .

S’en est suivie une période sans véritable émission dédiée avec des sélections internes, et le retour d’une sélection nationale en 2014 avec trois émissions « Les Chansons d'abord » presented by Natasha Saint-Pier, format qui dévoilait les candidats et proposait au téléspectateur de faire le choix final pour l’Eurovision. C’est Twin Twin with Moustache was representing France that year.

We'll have to wait until 2018 and 2019 to see the return of a Eurovision France national selection: Destination Eurovision (a format from which the duo Dear Sir or Madam and Bilal Hassani l’année suivante). Puis après l’année blanche en 2020 où l’Eurovision a été annulée pour cause de pandémie, le format de sélection nationale revient en 2021 et en 2022 avec « Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez !" with a public vote at the heart of the decision-making process (Barbara Pravi then Alvan & Ahez)
