We were lucky enough to spend some quality time with Beatriçe Gjergji and Kolë Laca, the duo from Shkodra Elektronike qui représente l’Albanie à l’Eurovision 2025 après leur victoire au Festival i Këngës (« FIK »). Ensemble, ils nous ont parlé de leur parcours musical, leur projet commun et des coulisses de leur préparation à l’Eurovision. Entre anecdotes personnelles, échanges sur leur processus créatif et leurs ambitions pour l’Eurovision, cet entretien nous a permis de mieux comprendre leur passion et leur authenticité.
Tout d’abord, félicitations pour votre victoire au Festival i Këngës et pour l’opportunité de représenter l’Albanie à l’Eurovision 2025 ! Comment vous sentez-vous d’avoir atteint cette étape incroyable ?
Beatriçe : C’est un sentiment incroyable, presque irréel, mais tellement beau. On essaie encore de comprendre exactement ce qui se passe et ce qui est à venir. Il y a encore beaucoup à faire, c’est un travail en constante évolution.
Kolë : Oui, il n’y a pas eu de temps pour vraiment assimiler tout ça, il y a tellement à faire. On a dû réajuster nos emplois du temps. Avec notre manager, on prépare énormément de choses, c’est un travail nonstop. Organiser tout ça avec le peu de temps qu’on a, ce n’est pas facile, mais on reste concentrés sur ce qu’il faut faire.
Revenons sur ce moment où vous avez pris conscience que vous avez gagné le FIK. Il y a eu un instant de doute (NDLR lors de l’annonce du gagnant), comme si vous n’arriviez pas à réaliser. Comment vous êtes-vous sentis à ce moment précis ?
Beatriçe : Franchement, sur scène, personne n’a compris ce qui se passait, jusqu’à la toute fin. Quand on a réalisé qu’on avait gagné, on était là, « Quoi ?! Comment ça ? » On se regardait tous avec une surprise totale. C’était un moment où personne ne s’attendait à ce résultat, ni nous, ni même le public.
Kolë : C’était vraiment un moment de vérité, d’authenticité. Tout le monde était un peu dans le flou, et ce n’est qu’après que l’on a réellement commencé à comprendre l’ampleur de ce qui venait de se passer. C’était un instant où même nous, on avait besoin de temps pour digérer cette victoire.
Vous avez formé votre duo en 2019. Qu’est-ce qui vous a réunis en tant que partenaires musicaux ? Et comment avez-vous collaboré depuis ce moment-là ?
Beatriçe : In fact, I came across a video of Kolë on YouTube, where he was performing a traditional song from Shkodër (Editor's note: or Shkodra ) . Before 2019, it was part of a project called Two Pigeons. I just sent him a message on Facebook to thank him for his work.
Kolë : When I saw her message, I went to her page and discovered that she sang and performed with her band. I immediately fell in love with her style, the way she sang and her stage presence. And then I discovered that we were both from Shkodra, my home town in Albania. I'd already thought about creating a project based on traditional songs from Shkodra, but with an Italian singer, it was difficult to make it happen.
Et en 2019, on a commencé à jouer ensemble et à faire nos premiers concerts. Puis, en février 2020, on a fait une petite tournée en Albanie et au Kosovo, et on a vu qu’on avait un vrai public. C’était vraiment le début de notre aventure. Puis la pandémie est arrivée.
C’est une belle histoire, et c’est vraiment fascinant que vous soyez tous les deux originaires de la même ville ! Cela semble presque être du destin !
Beatriçe : Yes, we didn't know each other before. And later I found out that my mother was best friends with Kolë's mother!
Your music blends Albanian and modern influences. Was this a deliberate choice or did it come about naturally? And what are your main musical influences?
Kolë : As for my influences, I listen to a lot of bands like Massive Attack and Björk, and I'm also a big jazz fan. The idea of mixing modern and traditional music came naturally to me. I didn't want to change the songs, but rather discover the modernity that was already there. What's more, as I play the keyboard, it's natural for me to arrange the songs with electronic sounds. My main role is to structure and arrange the songs, and I let the song itself guide this process.
Beatriçe : For 'Zjerm »', we wrote the song specifically for the Festival i Këngës. I usually write the lyrics, and for this song I wrote my part, but the part sung by Kolë was written by an artist from Shkodra, Lekë Gjeloshi. When I started writing my part, I was thinking about the festival, about what I'd like to see on television - what kind of concepts, words and songs would resonate with me. It was a personal need to hear a song about kindness, about people doing good things, rather than hurting each other. And 'Zjerm »' was born out of that. Kolë took my idea and started to develop it, like a jigsaw puzzle.
How do you divide up the work when you write your songs? Who does what?
Kolë : It depends on the song. When we started out, we only used traditional songs. To date, all our songs, except for "Zjerm" and one other ("Ku E Gjtea Vedin"), are traditional songs. For each one, I take care of the structure and arrangement, using electronic instruments and drums while keeping the traditional aspect.
Pour « Zjerm », c’était différent. Beatriçe a composé toute la mélodie. Le seul changement que j’ai proposé, c’était l’intro. Je lui ai dit : « Peut-être que c’est trop, on n’en a pas besoin. » Et c’est tout. Toutes les parties mélodiques viennent de Beatriçe , et moi je me suis chargé de l’arrangement et de la production.
Beatriçe : Basically, we're pretty free. I take care of the vocal part, but we can also swap roles. Maybe one time I'll be the one to arrange something!
What does this song mean to you personally?
Beatriçe : C’est une chanson magnifique. Elle me fait me sentir mieux, pas parce que nous l’avons écrite, mais simplement parce que c’est une chanson qui, aujourd’hui, me fait du bien. Je l’ai beaucoup aimée à un moment où j’avais besoin d’écouter quelque chose de plus léger. Mais si tu l’écoutes beaucoup, tu peux en découvrir des aspects plus profonds et intenses. Ce n’est pas seulement dans les mots, bien sûr, mais aussi dans le son du violon, ou celui des instruments électroniques.
Kolë : Ça me rappelle quand j’ai voulu intégrer la çiftelia, cet instrument traditionnel, au début de la chanson. Je réfléchissais à qui appeler pour l’enregistrer, puis je me suis souvenu qu’un homme vendait des instruments traditionnels dans notre ville, Shkodër. Je suis allé le voir, mais tous les instruments étaient accrochés à un arbre. On m’a dit qu’il était probablement dans un bar en train de boire du raki et que si je jouais un peu, il finirait par venir. J’ai joué un moment, mais personne n’est venu. Finalement, un jeune homme est arrivé et m’a dit qu’il allait chercher son oncle, le vendeur.
Quand il est arrivé, c’était un géant avec des mains énormes, un peu comme un personnage de dessin animé. Il a pris l’instrument, a commencé à jouer, puis m’a dit que c’était cher. Je lui ai expliqué que j’avais déjà acheté un instrument chez lui l’année précédente, et il m’a fait un prix de 70. De retour chez moi, j’ai enregistré l’instrument en une matinée, rapide et un peu débridée.
What was the reaction of your fans? to "Zjerm ?
Beatriçe & Kolë : La réaction a été incroyablement positive. Avant le festival, on avait déjà un petit groupe de fans fidèles qui nous suivaient depuis 2019, et ils nous ont écrit pour nous dire qu’ils savaient qu’un jour, Shkodra Elektronike serait reconnu. C’est vraiment touchant.
How are you preparing for Eurovision?
Kolë : Il y a vraiment énormément de choses à faire pour se préparer à l’Eurovision, mais aussi pour les autres chansons que nous devons sortir après. Notre plan initial était de participer au FIK, puis de sortir notre album en janvier ou février, mais avec notre victoire, tout a changé. Nous avons dû tout réorganiser. Par exemple, maintenant nous devons préparer des photos, organiser les visuels de notre performance. Il y a vraiment beaucoup de détails à gérer.
Beatriçe : The staging will inevitably be different, because the scene itself is different. But the story we want to tell will remain the same, because the song doesn't change. To be honest, we still don't know exactly what it will be like. If we don't have a precise answer, it's simply because it hasn't been decided yet.
Kolë : Yes, that's it. Beatriçe will dance in a certain way... and I won't! But we're not thinking of changing our roles.
You both live in Italy. Have you had time to follow the Sanremo Festival over the last few weeks?
Kolë : I watched the first few evenings... but to be honest, it wasn't really planned. My flatmate was desperate to watch, while I was watching a football match on my phone at the same time. We argued a bit, because I wanted to watch the match on TV!
Beatriçe : Mais j’ai quand même vu quelques extraits à la télé ou sur mon téléphone. Bien sûr, je devais quand même jeter un œil à Sanremo ! Je regarde Sanremo chaque année. J’ai regardé la finale de l’Eurovision l’année dernière, et j’ai trouvé ça sympa. Mais le plus important, c’est que mon groupe vocal préféré, c’est ABBA. Donc, rien que pour ça, il faut dire un grand merci à l’Eurovision !
Finally, when you think about your performance at Eurovision 2025, what message or emotion would you like to convey to the public in Albania and Europe?
Kolë : I'd just like to say that things happen naturally, without too much force. If you express your emotions simply and honestly, in an authentic way, then it works.
Beatriçe : Yes, and above all, believe in yourself, because incredible things can happen, just as it happened to you. Keep doing what you love, without trying to fit into a mould - whether it's music, lyrics, appearance... You just have to be yourself. I think that's why people chose us. It's still hard to believe, but it's happened.
Kolë : Yes, and I think that if people have chosen us, it's because they recognise themselves in us. After the festival, people often said to us: "You're just like us". And I think that's what it really comes down to. Just normal people doing what they love, without thinking too much or trying too hard. If something happens, great. If it doesn't, that's fine too.
