Towards a « French Sanremo »? The future of the Eurovision France national selection
Will we soon see the return of a Eurovision France national selection? You might think so. In an interview on Sud Radio on Friday 21 March 2025, Alexandra Redde-Amiel, Director of Games Entertainment at France Télévisions, spoke about the masterly performance of Louane at the Stade de France last week, who unveiled his song " Mum" Alexandra Redde-Amiel also said she wanted to " growing the Eurovision brand" . But more than that, she declared that she had " the ambition to return to the national team, to have a French Sanremo" .
Then she continues: " The important thing to remember is that we love Eurovision, we do it with passion, it's the story of a team, it's the story of a dynamic, it's the story of a desire to go out and win it one day." .
This desire to strengthen the brand and get artists and audiences more involved augurs well for future editions. There's plenty to get French Eurovision fans excited about!
History of the Eurovision France National Selection
Over the years, the Eurovision National Selection France has adopted different formats. Over the last 25 years, the candidate has been selected by the programme " Eurovision: the selection" in 1999 and 2000, followed by " A candidate for Eurovision » in 2005, then Eurovision 2006: What if it were you? ? » and finally " Eurovision 2007: What if we won?" .
This was followed by a period without any real dedicated programme, with in-house selections, and the return of a national selection in 2014 with three " Les Chansons d'abord » presented by Natasha Saint-Pierwhich revealed the candidates and gave viewers the chance to make the final choice for Eurovision. Twin Twin with Moustache was representing France that year.
We'll have to wait until 2018 and 2019 to see the return of a Eurovision France national selection: Destination Eurovision (a format from which the duo Dear Sir or Madam and Bilal Hassani the following year). Then, after a blank year in 2020 when Eurovision was cancelled due to the pandemic, the national selection format will return in 2021 and 2022 with "Eurovision". Eurovision France, you decide!" with a public vote at the heart of the decision-making process (Barbara Pravi then Alvan & Ahez)
